Teen Read Week, a week where libraries celebrate teen materials, starts this Sunday, October 17th and ends October 23rd. I wanted to do something for Teen Read Week to show why I love YA literature. I love YA literature because the stories and characters are straight to the point. Unlike adult literature, where you have to read hundreds of pages to set a setting, plot, and characters, YA literature is instantly gratifying, which is not to say it's not thought provoking. In order to share my love of YA literature, I'm going to have a "I Heart YA Giveaway". For this giveaway, I will be giving away 6 titles from a variety of genres for 6 winners:
Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card |
Matched by Ally Condie |
Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen |
Swift Pure Cry by Siobhan Dowd |
Girl in the Arena by Lise Haines |
Looking for Alaska by John Green |

+ 2 Why do you like YA literature? I don't have to be as worried about adult content that I won't enjoy reading about and find the writing styles normally much easier to read and understand. It makes reading feel so much more laid back and fun!
Great giveaway!!!

+2 - Why do I like YA? Well I love the characters, since I'm still in that age group myself I can easily relate to them. But, even when I'm not I think I'll still love them. The stories just seem to hold so many relateable elements, things that don't always seem relateable at a first glance, but when you look closer they are. Like how, in The Mortal Instruments, Clary feels like she doesn't belong, well don't we all feel that at one time or another? That's why I love it, it's easy to get caught up in a story when you can relate. :)

+2: I love YA bc for the escapism. It's typically easy to read and doesn't try as hard as "adult" fiction to be literary.

+2: I like YA books because they're not as dense and weighty as most adult books, they're more readable, and I suppose I still feel like a teen in some ways! They just seem to be more fun :D
Also, I liked what you said about them being "instantly gratifying." Never thought of them quite that way, but I know what you mean.

I like it because a lot of YA fantasy is just as good and complex as Adult fantasy (ie, Howl's Moving Castle) but it takes out all the raunchiness and sex and violent behavior

+2 I guess it's because there are no limits, except the protags are teens and the audience is broadly teenaged--YA is a genre that encompassses everyhing from paranormal to historical to contemporary--comedy, tragedy, romance, social commentary...what other genre has this kind of depth?

+2 I like YA literature for several reasons. Firstly, I'm a teen so it's what I can relate to. Secondly, it's one of the only genres I can read that can have fun supernatural elements without graphic sex scenes. Also, teens deal with a lot of issues and that allows the author the be more creative. There are romantic issues, family issues, friend issues, self-esteem issues, academic issues, etc.

+2 I love YA literature because it's usually really vivid. The writing is more believable to me. Even though a lot of it is paranormal. I just don't really relate to regular fiction even though I am an adult.

I like YA books because they remind me that I don't have to deal with the petty stuff that teens deal with (one of the few upsides of being an adult). I also like that they are cleaner for the most part than adult fiction. They are just fun! +2

+2 Why do I like YA literature? I like YA lit. for a ton of reasons. I'm 16 years old so YA books are meant for my age group, I love all of the awesome books that are YA and I find it more relatable to read books being told from the point of view of someone who is my age. Oh, and there are a ton of hot guys in YA fiction (though I know there are in adult lit. but I prefer the the teenaged boys in YA lit at the moment)!
